Papers, 1836-1901.

Collection centers on George Washington Dame, Episcopal minister and educator of Danville, Va., and his wife, Mary Maria (Page) Dame. Letters, ca. 1850-1859, from George to Mary discuss his work as a minister and the operation of their household during her absence and provide insights into their marriage. Letters, 1846-1863, to Mary from her sister, Lucy Jane (Page) Cushing, contain information on religion and the activities of family members, as well as events in Danville and beyond. Also included are letters from Jonathan Cushing Dame to his parents and to Mary from her nieces and other female relatives. A small amount of correspondence pertains to the operation of schools by George, sometimes with Mary, including a school for girls in the 1850's.
